Abstract

Paideia is the formation and education of a citizen of a Greek polis (with the exception of Sparta) through the liberal arts (grammar, logic, and rhetoric), arithmetic, morality (in the study of music, poetry, and philosophy), and physical refinement in gymnastics and wrestling. The Greek tradition of the liberal arts has played a similar central role in Western civilization, just as Confucianism has in Chinese civilization.
