Abstract

Whose power is greater: the king’s or the pope’s? This was the key question in eleventh-century Europe. From nearly its inception, Christianity had been a religion with strong political ties. Early bishoprics were political positions as much as they were religious ones, and from the time when Charlemagne (742–814 CE) received his crown from the pope, Christian kings were believed to be sanctioned by God.
