Abstract
The origins of the Merovingian dynasty of the Frankish kingdom are somewhat obscured by legend and a lack of sources. The dynasty was named for Merovech (a figure who may or may not have actually lived), but the first Merovingian king in the historical record was Childeric I, who reigned from 457 to 481 or 482 CE and added the lands of other Frankish leaders to his own as well as fighting other Germanic tribes such as the Visigoths.
