The late Roman Empire embraces the period from Marcus Aurelius, who ruled from 161 to 180, until 476, when the Germanic chieftain Odoacer deposed the last Western Roman emperor, Romulus Augustus, and proclaimed himself king. In the ancient world, events proceeded with glacial slowness, allowing us time to watch them unfold over generations.
