Abstract

In medieval Europe, up until the eleventh century, kings possessed both sacral and secular powers. Because the Bible stated that “there is no authority except from God” (Romans 13:1), a king was believed to have holy sanction and was anointed with holy oil upon his coronation, effectively making him both priest and king.
