Abstract

The modern university originated in the Middle Ages. Before the twelfth century, what little higher education took place was in schools attached to cathedrals and monasteries. The growing need of state and church bureaucracies for educated men led to a growth in higher education that spawned the university. The university was also the body that assimilated the increasing body of ancient learning becoming available for the first time, particularly the works of Aristotle and his ancient and Arabic commentators.
