Abstract

At the end of the sixth century BCE, Rome eliminated its monarchical system of government and replaced it with a republican system—one in which the good of the public (the res publica) is looked after by citizens who are selected for that purpose. The new republic kept the powers of the kings—especially the imperium, the right to govern—in place but changed the ways those powers could be accessed.
