Abstract

We can talk about two distinct senses in which Jesus of Nazareth was of Jewish origin: the narrow ethnic sense and the religious one. New Testament writers asserted that Jesus was born of Jewish parents in Judea, who raised him in the environment of traditional Judaism. Two out of the four canonical Gospels (Matthew and Luke) provide genealogical lists of Jesus’ ancestors (although the two lists diverge at a certain point), tracing his lineage to King David and further back to Abraham.
