Abstract

Early Roman culture was heavily influenced by outside elements. The Etruscans, who occupied the area of Italy north and west of Latium, the territory surrounding Rome, and who provided Rome with some of her early kings, seem to have been the originators of gladiatorial combat. Some Etruscan tombs, which are still being uncovered in modern Tuscany, feature frescos of slaves fighting one another.
