Abstract

In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, a series of disasters struck the people of medieval Europe. Demographically, they were hit by famine and plague. Politically, a series of bloody, endless wars among Christian monarchs accompanied the loss of Christian territories to the seemingly unstoppable Muslim Turks. Religiously, the authority of the papacy and the Catholic Church was rocked by a series of scandals and splits in authority.
